Okay, so the story behind this one is that I was cruising around the net looking at crochet projects as I do constantly and I ran across hairpin lace crochet. OOOHHH, what is that?!? I asked myself, I had never seen it before, so I Googled it.
I clicked on Stitch Diva and oh, the beautiful things Jen Hansen has made with hairpin lace. My fingers were itching and aching to try this, so that night I looked around trying to find something I could improvise...nada...so for that night I had to just dream about trying it. The next day, I ventured out to Crafty Things and then to Jusco (off base)...again, nada. I was almost heartbroken. I was really hoping that I would be able to find something here, so I wouldn't have to wait for them to ship it. Then, Mark said he would make one for me. We just never got around to it, though, I did go and look around the Makeman store (We call it the Monkey Man store). So after a couple of weeks, I finally HAD to order it, so I did...and I am so HAPPY I did!!!! I received this Hairpin Lace Loom that is pretty and functional. It is supposed to be handmade and I am sold. I could still smell the stain when I received my tissue paper wrapped, personal note attached, loom from Jenkins Woodworking. I started messing around with it as soon as I could hand the baby off to Mark. That night, I made Elizabeth's scarf and the next day I started working on a skirt for the little miss. Want to show you guys the loom.
Wow cool. So what's the benefit of using a hairpin lace loom? I watched one of Jenkins Woodworking's videos on youtube and it looks pretty neat but it seems to keep a lot of "white space" where it leaves huge holes. I guess i just dont know enough about crochet and t hats probably something you want? :S
ReplyDeleteYes, it leaves loops on either side. These strips are very versatile, actually. You can make a doily out of them, join the strips to make a scarf, skirt, dress. The list is as long as your imagination can make it. I will be posting the skirt that I made for Ellie today. I am going to explain how I did it as well.
