I got my loom and I know how to use it now. I decided that I wanted to make a skirt...well, actually, that is the reason I wanted the loom in the first place. I fell in love with Jen Hansen's skirt which I found on Ravelry. I couldn't find a pattern that would fit a 5 year old, so I decided to attempt it on my own with no pattern. It turned out pretty. I don't know how to write a hairpin lace pattern, but I will share how I did it here. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask me. Next time I will share more photos of the process.
The "Pattern"-
You will definitely want to use a guide, I didn't think it would be necessary, but I found out very quickly the purpose of it was to keep things in order, so that even if your panel twists (which it will), you can easily fix it.
When counting the loops, only count one side. I joined as I made each panel. But you can also make all of the panels and then lay them out and join all at the same time.
I used 10 oz. Lily Sugar'n Cream Cotton-Worsted Wt. with an H hook. You will also need 1 1/2 in elastic. I set my loom at 3 in.
Make 3 panels of 110 loops. Make 3 panels of 165 loops. Make 3 panels of 220 loops.
I joined the 110 panels 2x2 loops. The 110 and 165 panels 2x3 loops. The 165 panels 3x3 loops. The 165 and 220 loops 3x4. The 220 panels 2x2.loops.
To join the the fabric into a round, I weaved the tails into the opposite sides of the skirt to hold it together. With the WS facing, sc down the seam; fasten off, weave in ends.
The bottom egde:
Join with slst to any loop; sc around the bottom in each loop; fasten off, weave in your ends.
The top edge:
Rd 1: Join with slst to any loop; sc around with 2 loops- join with slst into first sc, ch 1.
Rd 2: sc in each st around; join with slst into first sc, ch 3.
Rd 3-6: dc in ea st around; join with slst, ch 3.
Rd 7: dc in ea st around; join with slst, ch 1.
Rd 8: sc in ea st around; join with slst, ch 1.
Rd 9: sc in ea st around; join with slst, fasten off; weave in ends.
To make the "pocket" for the elastic:
Fold over top to the WS, so Rd 1 and Rd 9 line up and whipstitch around, insert elastic when convenient for you (sew edges of elastic together), finish whipstitching around; fasten off and weave in the ends.
That is how I made this skirt. It was only my second hairpin lace project, so I don't know if this is the "correct" way to do it. It turned out well, but if you have any suggestions to make it better, please feel free to comment or email me. Thank you for checking this pattern out!! Happy crocheting!!
